The Deputy Prime Minister of Voices of Democracy is an ex-officio member of the cabinet, a member of the Council of State, and is often regarded as the most senior member of the executive branch under the Prime Minister.
Assuming Prime Ministerial Responsibilities
In the event of a vacancy in the post of Prime Minister due to impeachment, resignation, or unavailability to perform certain functions, the President appoints an Acting Prime Minister. While it is not required, it is traditionally the Deputy Prime Minister who is appointed to this position.
Roles in Single Party and Coalition Governments
In a single party government, the Deputy Prime Minister is often the deputy leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives, or alternatively, they may be the second on the election list if there is no designated deputy leader. In the context of a coalition government, the Deputy Prime Minister is typically the leader of the party with the second greatest plurality in the House's coalition.
Deputy Prime Minister's Influence in Coalition Deals
While the Prime Minister holds the de facto leadership of the cabinet, coalition agreements occasionally grant the second greatest party's cabinet members the responsibility to answer to the Deputy Prime Minister. This provision enables the Deputy Prime Minister to exercise authority and influence over the policies and actions of coalition members.
